HEAVY MTL 2010 July 24-25 Review

As you walk off the metro you can already feel the buzz of the crowed above you. You walk up the stairs and when you get to the top it’s filled with metal heads making their way to the gate. Everyone’s laughing and smiling.
As you pass thru the front gate a person hands you a little ticket that allowes you to get 10 free songs from iTunes. Then the music hits you. The bass is like a bomb dropping; you can feel it go thru your body. The guitar is so crisp it cuts like a chainsaw and the vocals fly on top of all the music bringing it all together.
This is only day one of two. 14 bands on 2 stages will play today and 20 bands on 3 stages will play tomorrow. Saturday is the old school day. Bands like Anvil, Testament, Slayer, Fear Factory, Alice Cooper and a bunch more amazing bands. The two stages are side by side so there is no wait time between bands. When one is playing the other stage is being set up so as soon as one band finishes you have to book it to the other one if you want a good spot up front. Its very rare you go to a show and there’s no wait time between acts.
The heat was so intense that it was hard to stay in the sun for long periods of time. There is some shade though up on the hill about 200 feet from the stage. Fortunately the sound was so loud and good you didn’t miss a beet from a couple hundred feet away. You didn’t want to miss a beat either; Slayer played their entire Seasons in the Abyss album. Let me tell you it was awesome they didn’t miss a note. All the solos sounded just like the album. I was fortunate enough to score a couple minutes with Gene Hoglan from Fear Factory, Deathklok and Death. He’s a real down to earth guy. He said he was going to Europe to play early the next week. I asked him if he would rather play here and he said you have tech problems wherever you go. Well he didn’t have any problems today because his drums probably sounded the best out of all the bands that day. He told me he was playing the same kit he used on the new album.
The food and drink were very expensive. It was 5$ for a hotdog and 5.75$ for a cup of beer. Budweiser had a giant transport party truck that sold cans shaped like bottles for 7$. There were a couple chip trucks, a Dagwoods sandwich truck, lemonade stand and a few scattered ice cream vendors on bicycles. There was more beer than anything else so I felt right at home.
Jagermeister had their own ten there as well. They had a bar, a little corner with guitars for people to go check out and a section where different musicians did signing sessions throughout the weekend. The line-ups were extremely long for the meet n greet part of the tent so I didn’t try my luck. How could I forget Jager had shooter girls walking around the park it was epic I have never seen this before and I’ve been going to this park for 15 years. What a great Idea, thank you Jager!
Day one ended with Megadeth. I was fortunate enough to meet David Ellefson before he went on. David was yet again another really cool guy. He said he has no problem mixing family life while being on tour. He said he learned from Alice Cooper years before not to over do the road and make time for the Family. Megadeth played their entire Rust in Peace album. Can you say EPIC!!!!!!!! The sound was clearer than when they made the album. Maybe sobriety has something to do with it. After they played their show Megadeth headed to the Metropolis and played a free show!!!!!! If you haven’t been to Montreal before Metropolis is the best place to see a show in Montreal!!!
So its day 2 20 bands 3 stages lets get it on. Right away you notice the sound from the 3rd stage and the other two collide at a sweep spot about 150 feet from the other two so the sound on the hill wasn’t as good as the day before. Fortunately it’s not near as hot so you’re no thinking about shade so much. A few of the bands that played Sunday were 3 inches of blood, Chimaira, Norma Jean Five Finger Death Punch, Hate Breed , Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold and the headliners Rob Zombie and Korn.
I was fortunate enough to meet Rob Zombie and Munky and Ray from Korn. Rob Zombie is a super cool down to earth guy. I asked him if the rumours were true about him re-doing the classic horror flick The Blob. He said he probably wasn’t going to but was going to do another movie next year. I also met his bass player Piggy he was also a pretty cool dude. Unfortunately Joey Jordson slipped away from me before I could go harass him.
Munky and Ray were a couple of jokers. They seemed like they just like laughing and having fun, once again two thumbs up for the rock stars they were all pretty cool with no big heads. Munky said he didn’t want to discuss old band members so we talked about the new album. He said they wanted to get back to what they were doing when the first two albums came out. They wanted the same emotion they had then.
All the bands kicked ass again today. The crowed wasn’t as big as the day before but it was still a ton of people. As usual metal heads stick together. You could go up to anyone and chat with them. If someone falls in the pit people help them up. I saw one fight the whole weekend and it looked like two guys that just had too much to drink. I give the show an 8 out of 10. I would defiantly suggest everyone go next year. The line-ups for food and the cost was a little ridiculous. There was only one merch tent for the bands and no other merch. Local vendors could probably do well at these events but maybe that’s what the promoters are trying to stray away from. I have really high standards so an 8 out of 10 is a really high score. Like I always say Metal Heads Stick together. Great Weekend!!!! Check out the Metal Mayhem tour in the states for some of the same bands but not all.  How could I forget David Ellefson said he thinks the big four might make it to America eventually if you haven’t heard of that line up its Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax.

For MHBradio reviews I’m TBone and Metal4Life.
